Fire insurance rates are lowered in Blackey area

The national Insurance Services Offices (ISO) now recognizes the Blackey Fire Station, lowering insurance rates for residents living within a five-mile radius of the station, according to the Blackey City Council.

The Blackey Fire Station is a branch of the Letcher County Fire and Rescue Service, and is equipped with two fire trucks donated by the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department in Big Stone Gap, Va.

The ISO recognition will appear in its mapping beginning Dec. 1, and in its Community Mitigation Classification Manual in January 2008.

Residents located in a fivemile radius may now contact their insurance agent to get their rates lowered. Insurance companies will not automatically reduce the rates. Residents unsure of their distance from the Blackey Station can contact Letcher Fire and Rescue at 633- 8058.

In other business, the Blackey Council passed a resolution declaring September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
