Firefighters still watching 1,200-acre blaze at Jenkins

A light rain on the night of November 8 gave firefighters a brief respite from wildfires here, but as the ground dried out, fires rekindled.

As of November 15, there were no fires classed as uncontrolled in Letcher County, but the Kentucky Division of Forestry is still monitoring the 1,200-acre Number 1 Hill fire, which crept all the way round Jenkins and is now burning between U.S. 23 and U.S. 119, said Mike Harp, public information officer for the division.

“We’ve got control lines around it, and we’re monitoring it because of the relentless leaf fall,” Harp said.

He said personnel are following those control lines and blowing away leaf litter daily to prevent the fire from getting out again.
