Fiscal court accepts bid for demolition of old A&P

The Letcher County Fiscal Court has moved a step closer to building a proposed new $6 million recreational center in downtown Whitesburg.

The court voted during a special meeting to accept a bid to demolish the old A&P building, where the center will be located, from Addington and DePriest of Jenkins. David Addington and Todd DePriest submitted the low bid of $44,600 and will have 45 days to complete the project after they are able to begin.

Other bids were submitted by Doyle Wright of H&G Trucking of Isom, $108,000; T.J. Parsons of Coal Fields Contracting of Colson, $73,400; and Breeding’s Plumbing and Electric of Isom, $89,250.

Demolition will begin as soon as the project architect completes an asbestos study and air quality test. Addington and DePriest will have 10 days to begin demolition after the air quality test is performed.
