The Letcher County Fiscal Court held a special called meeting Monday to address three important pieces of business. The meeting was brief, lasting around 10 minutes, but the agenda items have the potential for long lasting effects.
The court voted unanimously to approve an application for a Homeland Security Grant to allow for the purchase of body armor and Tasers for the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department. The court will act as a pass-through and administer the funds, which will then be used for the sheriff ’s department.
The court also voted unanimously to support a Community Connect Grant, which will be used to provide Broadband service to areas in the county which have no Internet service at this time. The grant will focus on areas in the county that do not have cable television or telephone service that includes an Internet connection.
The court voted to request a drawdown of coal severance funds from House Bill 303 that will be used to make an annual loan payment for the Letcher County Recreation Center. The funds are already appropriated and will need to be drawn down from state funds in order to be used for the payment.
