Food City seeks beer license

A Whitesburg grocery store has become the first retail establishment to formally apply for a license to sell alcohol by the package.

Food City took the initial step this week when its owner, K-VA-T Food Stores Inc. of Abingdon, Va., will advertised a public notice in The Mountain Eagle declaring its intention to apply for a retail beer license with the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

The path for Food City and other businesses to sell beer was cleared in late June when residents in the City of Whitesburg voted by a margin of more than two-to-one to allow package alcohol sales in the city.

The Whitesburg City Council will begin the process of adopting a new city ordinance to accommodate the package sales at its August meeting. The city is expected to qualify for two package stores that can sell liquor and wine in addition to beer.
