At least 5,196 acres in Letcher County have been affected by a forest fire, including four miles of Little Shepherd Trail.
The forest fire originated at Bartesta Branch at Big Cowan on November 25, said Herman Slone, district forester with the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
Some of the Pioneer Horse Trail atop Pine Mountain is also burning as well as portions leading from Dinah Blair Hollow to Scuttle Hole Gap. All three areas of Big Cowan lead to Pine Mountain.
Slone said Letcher County Rangers and Division of Forestry crews are still putting fire lines in for containment.
Slone said rainfall Tuesday morning helped some.
“It’s knocked it down,” said Slone. “We still have a lot of trees that are burning.”
