Former Blackey postmaster dies




Mable Bates Back, 91, longtime Letcher County resident and former postmaster at Blackey, died May 20 at St. Joseph Hospice Care Unit in Lexington.

A daughter of the late Can and Cora Bates, she was the widow of Clyde Back. She was a member of the Beaumont Presbyterian Church in Lexington.

Mrs. Back attended Caney College and Pikeville College and taught school before being employed by the post office. In 1986, she moved to Lexington, where most of her family lives. She had been in poor health for the past year.

Surviving are a half-brother, Carter Bates; three daughters, Pat Cook, Mary Lou Croucher, and Beth Hunter; and two sons, Jesse Back and Bill Back.

Funeral services were held in Lexington. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Lexington.
