Former Jenkins Mayor Earnest ‘Sam’ Wyatt dies

Former Jenkins Mayor Earnest Lee “Sam” Wyatt, 82, died November 24 at his residence.

He was a son of the late George W. and Emmaline Potter Wyatt. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Eva Mae “Topsy” England Wyatt; an infant daughter, Doris Evelyn Watt; a son, Tony Wyatt; grandchildren, Samantha Lowe and Jerry Dillon Wyatt; sisters, Kansas Johnson, Annie Johnson, Nervie Johnson and Madge Wyatt; and brothers, Morgan Wyatt, Mackenzie Wyatt, Wesley Wyatt, George Wyatt, Rush Wyatt and Ben Wyatt.

Mr. Wyatt served as the Jenkins mayor for four years, as a Letcher County constable, a Jenkins police officer, and as fire chief.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing but his greatest joy was the time he spent with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Hensley Wyatt of Mayking; a daughter, Cindy Lowe and husband James of Pound, Va.; a son, Blake Wyatt and wife Debbie of Jenkins; grandchildren, Andrea Conley and husband Frank, Allison Wyatt, Tony Wyatt, Aaron Lowe, and Blakey Wyatt and wife Cheyenne; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family gives a special thanks to his caregiver, Jimmy Lowe.

Memorial services were held December 27 at the People’s Fundamental Baptist Church in Dunham.
