Former Little Cowan resident Wilma Jean Banks Day of Columbus, Ind., read in The Mountain Eagle that her first through third grade teacher, Ella Preston, is now living in Florence. In October Mrs. Day and her daughter went to visit Mrs. Preston.

They were delighted to find Mrs. Preston is good health, and she and Mrs. Day enjoyed reminiscing about their days together at Little Cowan School from 1943 to 1946. Mrs. Day turned 76 years old on Nov. 25, and Mrs. Preston celebrated her 97th birthday on Nov. 26.

Mrs. Preston remembers Mrs. Day, as well as her brother Justine and other schoolmates. Mrs. Day says Mrs. Preston was “a really good teacher.” The two women talked about the first grade reader “Blackie and Whitey”, stories about two Scottie dogs. They found they share a love of reading, especially mysteries.

Little Cowan School had a first through third grade classroom, a fourth through eighth grade classroom, and a cloakroom to store coats and boots.
