Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward appointed Perry Fowler coroner after Marty Baker resigned from his elected position.

In Baker’s resignation letter dated September 1, Baker said his stepping down is in the best interests of him and his loved ones.

“I’ve enjoyed serving the people of Letcher County and will always appreciate the opportunity that I was given to do so,” Baker said in the letter.

On September 3, Baker posted “Did I mention I hate winter weather?” on Facebook with a photograph of a Florida nursing license issued to him on August 28.

Fowler has served as a deputy coroner for a total of about 12 years.

“(Baker) wanted to clear a path and put everything in order in case he decided he wanted to leave,” said Fowler.

Baker posted the following message on Facebook Monday afternoon.

“To the people of Letcher County. I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as Letcher County Coroner for the past five years. Due to many changes in my life and plans for my future I’ve decided to resign from the position as of September 1. The coroner’s office is being left in good standing and in very good hands. My chief deputy, Perry Fowler, has been appointed coroner and his deputies will remain the same, Everett Duncan and Shane Dingus. Again, thank you for the support from the Letcher County Coroner’s Office.”
