Master Gunnery Sgt. Frederick Sinclair Tolliver USMC (Retired) died October 7 in Marco Island, Fla.
Born in Blackey to the late Franklin Abbot and Sarah Elizabeth Tolliver, he was the widower of Jaclyn Ladonna Brickey Tolliver.
He was the father of the late Elijah Mathias Tolliver and Bethany Llewellyn Tolliver Sorrenson.
He was graduated from Morehead State University and joined the Marine Corps where he served with the 1st Battalion 8th Marines in Beirut.
MGS Tolliver was instrumental in the development of the Marine Corps Mountain
Warfare School and later saw action in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently in Afghanistan as an adviser to Afghan resistance fighters in the mountains bordering Pakistan. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Silver Star.
Upon retiring from the service, he worked for the National Security Agency as an intelligence analyst.
Surviving are two sisters, Olivia Jane Jenkins of Lima, Oh., and Sarah Jane Simmons of Cincinnati, Oh.
Burial was at Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville, N.C.
