Funeral services were held Monday for a Whitesburg woman who died in a two-vehicle crash January 10 at Ice.
Brenda Skeens, 64, died at the scene of the accident on KY 588 at Ice Road.
Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a call concerning the collision at 12:49 p.m. Thursday. Trooper Bruce Kelley along with Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department and Letcher Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the scene on KY 588.
Police said Skeens was driving west in a 2013 Toyota Corolla when she attempted to turn left onto Ice Road. Skeens’s Corolla collided with a 2003 Jeep Cherokee which was traveling east. Skeens was pronounced dead at the scene by Letcher County Coroner Renee Campbell. The driver of the Jeep, 37-year-old John Sturgill of Whitesburg, was transported to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of injuries received in the crash, and was later transferred to Pikeville Medical Center.
An autopsy was performed Friday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort. Toxicology results from specimens obtained from Sturgill and Skeens are pending. Brenda Skeens was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision while John Sturgill was not. The incident remains under investigation by Detective Brandon Thomas with KSP Post 13.
Skeens was the daughter of the late Burl Skeens and Rena Lewis Skeens, and was born on July 21, 1954. She was member of First Baptist Church in Whitesburg.
Skeens is survived by a brother, Mack (Cheryl) Skeens of Wise, Va.; a nephew, Jacob Skeens of Knoxville, Tenn.; three nieces, Kristi Skeens of Whitesburg, Sabrena (Drew) Freeman of Wise, Va., and Tracy (Steve) Waddell of Mayking; and a very special friend, Lawrence Hall of Ice.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donnie Skeens and Darrell Skeens, and a nephew, Michael D. Skeens.
