Funeral Service Program working for accreditation

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College representatives Dr. Wheeler Conover, the college’s chief academic officer, and Denise R. Shumate, director of the Funeral Service Program, recently traveled to San Antonio, Tex., to meet with a committee on accreditation from the American Board for Funeral Service Education. Their meeting with the Texas group served as a follow-up to a visit made in March to the Cumberland campus by the accreditation team.

At the meeting, SKCTC officials presented to the ABFSE a self-study report. The trip to Texas also allowed Conover and Shumate the opportunity to discuss the self-study and answer questions about the fledgling Funeral Service Program at SKCTC that accepted its first class last fall.

The program is the only one in Kentucky, noted Dr. Conover. He explained the program is on track to be fully accredited by the spring of 2014. “The committee in San Antonio was well pleased with the progress made by Southeast’s program and was also complementary of the leadership shown by Ms. Shumate,” he said.

The SKCTC Funeral Service Program has 18 second-year students and is accepting students for the fall semester. Classes meet on the Cumberland campus on Monday and Tuesday. For more information, call 606-248-3141.
