Funeral service set for woman who was hit by car at Colson

Funeral services will be held Wednesday for a Colson woman who died after being struck by a car.

Connie Lou “Sally” Meade, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:50 p.m. on Dec. 27 by Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker. Multiple blunt force injuries are listed as the cause of death from the preliminary investigation.

Brittany Gross, 22, of Whitesburg, was traveling south on Highway

7 in a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt when the car struck Meade, who was apparently lying in the roadway, according to a Kentucky State Police news release.

After Meade was hit by the car, Gross slowed down her car, turned around in a nearby driveway and headed back to where Meade was lying, said KSP Det. Randy Combs.

KSP received a call reporting the incident at 9:33 p.m. The col- lision occurred in the southbound lane, but the victim came to rest in the northbound lane, police said.

Police have not determined why Meade was in the roadway. Police do not suspect foul play.

Combs said in addition to it being dark outside, Meade was wearing dark-colored clothes and it had been raining.

Police say impairment of Gross isn’t believed to have been a factor in the collision, but it is routine procedure for toxicology tests to be ordered. Toxicology results for Gross and Meade are pending.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday in Frankfort by the state medical examiner’s office.

Troopers and Neon EMS responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by Combs.

Meade was a daughter of Eliza Bates Combs, of Colson, and the late Clark Hall. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Dale Meade; two daughters, Ashley Hall and Brandi Meade, both of Colson; two brothers, Bobby Bates and Scotty Hall, both of Colson; a sister, Brenda Caudill, of Bevinsville; and a grandchild, Peyton Bentley.

Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, at the Lighthouse Church. Burial will follow in the Bates Cemetery at Colson.

Letcher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
