Funeral services for Donald “Sonny” Nelson, 89, of Fleming-Neon, were held July 30 at Green Acres Mausoleum. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery in Whitesburg.
A son of the late Denver C. and Lexie Bailey Nelson, he was preceded in death by several siblings. He died July 27 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Mr. Nelson was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on two ships as a radio operator. He was a member of the Jenkins First Baptist Church, and the Lonesome Pine Lodge #884 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Fleming-Neon.
He was a former owner of Western Auto in Neon, and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball and football fan. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and being a ham radio operator.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Norma A. Nelson; a sister, Betty Quillen, Haymond; a brother-in-law, Don Addington and wife Brenda, Lexington; a sister-in-law, Bea Harvey, Lebanon, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
