Jon Delano “JD” Goins, 82, of Saint Petersburg, Fla., died April 17.
Born at Carbon Glow to the late James L. Goins and Anna Ellen Raglin Goins Kapustin, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Jean and Janet; a brother, Jack Larue; and a niece, Elizabeth Ann Goins.
Surviving are a sister, Joyce Goins Slawson; a brother, James L. “Bud” Goins; two sons, Gary Delano Goins and Gregg Alan Goins; a daughter, Wendy Ann Goins; a granddaughter, Ashley Nicolle Goins DeWitt ; sisters- in- law, Theda Ray Powers Miner Price Moore and Virginia Blackstone Goins Segar; nieces and nephews, Pam Strickland, Paige Gosa, Valerie Goins Whitfield, Gwen Goins, Steve Goins, Karen Goins Morgan, Judy Goins Anderson, Robert Lewis Goins, Nadine L. Miner and Robert F. Miner Jr.; and ex-wife and mother of his children, Nadine Powers Goins Kruger.
After his father died of black-lung disease at age 36, Mr. Goins and his older siblings were housed and educated at the Junior Order Orphanage in Tiffin, Ohio and then in Lexington, N.C.
He was a star football player in high school and played semi-pro football for the Miami Barracudas until a knee injury. He started his college degree in engineering at North Carolina State University and earned a bachelor of science degree from Florida International University in Miami and a degree in public administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
A service will be held Saturday, May 18, at 4 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Home, 1001 E. Grace Ave., Haines City, Fla. 863-422-3933.
