Vacationing? Don’t forget fishing pole

This is the time of year that many people take their vacations, and many will visit places where some type of fishing can be done.

It has been so hot out recently that it has been dangerous to get outside, so please be very careful. Try to fish early and late and at night.

One of the best bass fishing tricks during this time of year is getting on the water near dark, just before a hard rain shower comes. This really turns the bass on and will make them move very shallow to feed. If you find yourself in this situation, fish some type of top water or buzz bait or shallow running crank bait or spinner bait for some good action.

A few years ago I took my family vacation during the month of July on Lake Cumberland. We rented a cabin for a few days and I took my boat with us. It was very hot during the day, but some cooler during the evening. I found a long bank with a huge cliff line that had shallow water close to the bank and then tapered off into deeper water before dropping off quickly into much deeper water.

While in that spot, I saw what looked like some good fish on the fish finder in about 20 to 25 feet of water. I tied on a jig and made my cast parallel to the cliff line. It was not long before I got a good strike. I set the hook and after a good fight I pulled a three-pound largemouth into the boat. As I went on down the cliff line I caught several nice bass weighing more than three pounds and a couple over four pounds. This turned out to be a very good trip and one I will never forget.

I am going on a trip soon to the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina to try some wade fishing and some fly fishing for big trout that go over 15 pounds. Have fun and be safe on your vacation.
