This early winter’s warmer temperatures are affecting the normal winter fishing patterns for the smallmouth bass.
Normally we would now be fishing in 20 to 30 degree weather with jigs and floating fly rigs, but because of the warm weather the bass are still active more shallow and on faster moving baits like crank baits and spinners and small tube baits and jigs.
I really enjoy going down to Dale Hollow Lake about this time every year for a smallmouth trip. We always do well and catch some nice fish. I have not gotten to go yet this year.
Smallmouth bass like to hang out around banks that have small gravel-size rocks on them. Work your baits around these areas or anywhere you see schools of baitfish breaking the surface. These fish can be very aggressive on baits and give a great fight.
If you never have fished for smallmouth bass in the winter, you really should give it a try.
