This is the time of year when it’s best to fish smaller baits such as jigs, tube baits, crank baits and spoons, along with bladed baits such as the silver buddy.
All the baits I mentioned above come in regular and smaller versions. Bass simply will not chase large baits in colder water or move a long way to chase any bait.
Bass will hold onto or around certain types of cover in winter. Some will school on vertical structure forms, and smaller baits make a much better winter presentation than a full-sized bait.
Fishing with smaller baits and looking for areas with schooling bass will increase your winter bass fishing chances greatly. Also, fish slower, more deliberately and tighter to cover for the best results. One good thing about fishing schooling bass is the chance to catch several nice fish off the same spot.
