Make new memories of pond fishing

I would say many of us have good memories of fishing in a pond of some type when we were younger.

There are many types of ponds in our area — farm ponds and old strip job ponds and some old ponds that seem to have been around forever. Whatever the type, the experience of fishing a pond is always fun.

Most of us have fished in an old farm pond before. I know I have very fond memories of catching some of the biggest bluegill I have ever caught in small farm ponds. Many huge bass have come from ponds. As a matter of fact, there are state record fish that have come from ponds in our state.

Ponds can range in size from small manmade ones to huge ones big enough to put a small fishing boat on. Each pond has its own unique style about it and will fish and act different than other ponds. Some will have better fishing for certain types of fish and some will have bigger fish and some may have good fishing for several different fish. You just have to fish each one enough to see what works best at each one.

Some of the older farm ponds can hold some big fish like bass and bluegill. Most of these type of ponds are on private familyowned land anymore, so be sure to try to get permission from the landowner before going on private property. But most landowners will let fisherman fish their ponds as long as they act responsively and do not leave a mess and trash thrown down.

On most ponds small baits in natural colors work well and live bait is hard to beat. Lures like small worms jigs and tube baits work as well as top water and crank baits fished slow and around any cover.

If you have not fished a pond in a while try to find one soon to fish.
