Gary Powers to receive medal

The U.S. Air Force will posthumously award the Silver Star to Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 pilot whose plane was shot down over the Soviet Union May 1, 1960.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz will present the medal to the grandchildren of Captain Powers, who will accept the medal on the family’s behalf during a ceremony at the Pentagon June 15.

Powers, a Letcher County native, will receive the medal for demonstrating “exceptional loyalty” while enduring harsh interrogation in the Lubyanka Prison in Moscow for almost two years.

Gary Powers Jr., the medal recipient’s son, and Chris Pocock, author of 50 Years of the U-2, will do a joint program discussing the U-2 incident at the Smithsonian Udvar Hazy Center at Dulles Airport on June 16.
