Gov. signs bill to help protect prep athletes

Gov. Steve Beshear has signed legislation aimed at helping safeguard high school athletes from heat stroke and other injuries.

The bill requires the state’s high school coaches to complete first aid and sports safety training on athlete heat stroke and cold emergencies.

The measure was spurred by the heat-related death of high school sophomore lineman Max Gilpin, who collapsed at practice last August. His coach, David Jason Stinson, has been charged with reckless homicide.

The bill signed by Beshear on Tuesday requires every high school coaching staff to have at least one member who completed the safety training attend each practice and game by the start of the next school year.

The legislation is HB 383.
