Grand jury indicts 15




The Letcher County Grand Jury has named 15 people in 16 indictments, including two women who are charged with burglary and four counts of assault.

Dorothy Eureka Lewis, 44, of 136 Elkhorn, Shelby Gap, is accused of burglary at an apartment at Goodwater Falls Apartments in Jenkins on May 2, 2009, where she is charged with causing injury to Sandra Brown, Angela Mays, Michael B. Mays, and Alfred Honeycutt. She is also charged with damaging the apartment and the property of Deborah Mays.

In a separate indictment, Elizabeth A. Honeycutt, 42, of P.O. Box 103, Whitesburg, is also charged with burglary on May 2, 2009, and with assaulting Angela Mays, Alfred Honeycutt, Sandra Brown, and Michael Brandon Mays.

Jenkins Police Officer Anthony Maggard testified in both cases.

Also indicted are:

• Robert Chad Brown — assault, burglary, wanton endangerment, terrorist threatening, and menacing.

The indictment charges Brown, 34, of 273 Barbara Bates Road, Whitesburg, with injuring Chris Day on July 4, 2009. He is also charged with pointing a firearm at and threatening Day.

Chris Day testified in the case.

• James H. Bays Jr. — speeding, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.

The indictment charges Bays, 62, of 6968 State Route 775, Proctorville, W.Va. 45669, with driving 10 miles per hour over the speed limit on U.S. 23 on March 10, 2009. He is also charged with having a stolen handgun, Lortab (a controlled substance), and marijuana.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Randy Surber testified in the case.

• Christy Lynn Polly — three counts of sex abuse.

The grand jury says Polly, 34, of 32 Andrew Lane, Whitesburg, sexually abused a female child three times in the period of January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Randy Combs testified in the case.

• David Allen Bentley — burglary and theft of a firearm.

Bentley, 28, of Box 97, Jackhorn, is charged with burglary at 71 Jet Drive, Jackhorn, on April 29, 2009, and with taking a firearm owned by Michael Sturgill.

Letcher County Deputy Mike Dingus testified in the case.

• Joyce Annette Brashears — theft and being a persistent felony offender.

Brashears, 42, also known as Joyce Annette Caudill, 261 Beaverdam Road, Whitesburg, is accused of taking more than $300 belonging to Kelly Hicks on June 20, 2009.

Kelly Hicks testified in the case.

• James Randall Collins — possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury accuses Collins, 44, 1360 Pert Creek Road, Whitesburg, a convicted felon, of possessing a shotgun.

In a separate indictment, Collins is charged with failing to appear at a scheduled hearing in Letcher District Court on May 12, 2009, in connection with a felony charge. He is also charged with being a persistent felony offender in that indictment.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Brandon Thomas testified in both cases.

• David Collins — two counts of possession of a controlled substance and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Collins, 26, of 1649 Smoot Creek Road, Whitesburg, is charged with possessing cocaine and marijuana on February 16, 2009. He is also charged with having plastic bags for use as drug paraphernalia.

Sgt. Brian Damron of the Letcher County Sheriff ‘s Department testified in the case.

• Lawrence Taylor — trafficking in marijuana.

The grand jury charges Taylor, 46, of 128 Moonshine Drive, Whitesburg, with possessing more than eight ounces of marijuana with the intent to sell it on March 14, 2009.

Kentucky State Police Detective Chuck Bledsoe testified in the case.

The Letcher County Grand Jury has charged five people with flagrant nonsupport for failing to provide support for their minor children.

Those indicted are:

• Ercel McPeeks, 41, of P.O. Box 542, Isom, is charged with owing $10,580.88 in child support for the period ending June 30, 2009. He is also charged with being a persistent felony offender.

• Ronald B. Williams, 28, of P.O. Box 217, Hallie, is charged with owing $26,266 in child support for the period ending June 30, 2009.

• Rufus Fields, 52, of 5508 Hwy. 510, Gordon, is charged with owing $99,751.33 in child support for the period ending June 30, 2009.

• Jeromey Sandlin, 23, of 192 Bulldog Hollow, Elizabethan, Tenn., is charged with owing $5,996.29 in child support for the period ending June 30, 2009.

• James Dix, 34, of 992 Hwy. 1148, Isom, is charged with owing $20,825.65 in child support for the period ending June 30, 2009.
