Grand jury indicts 15




The Letcher Grand Jury has returned indictments naming 15 people. Those named in the indictments and the charges against them are:

• Verbon Todd Griffie, one count of complicity to robbery, one count of complicity to burglary, one count of complicity to theft of a controlled substance, one count of complicity to impersonating a peace officer, one count of complicity to theft of property valued at less than $300.

Griffie, 33, of 207 Park Lane, Topmost, is charged with entering the residence of Oscar Craft on Sept. 12, 2007 with Brooke Collins and/ or Tony Ray Herald with one of the three claiming to be a UNITE officer and taking $180, Lorcet and Xanax while armed with a pistol.

• Brooke Leann Collins, one count of complicity to robbery, one count of complicity to burglary, one count of complicity to theft of a controlled substance, one count of complicity to impersonating a peace officer, one count of complicity to theft of property valued at less than $300.

Collins, 20, of 3221 Burgees Creek Road, Mallie, is charged with entering the residence of Oscar Craft on Sept. 12, 2007 with Verbon Todd Griffie and/or Tony Ray Herald with one of the three claiming to be a UNITE officer and taking $180, Lorcet and Xanax while armed with a pistol.

• Tony Ray Herald, one count of complicity to robbery, one count of complicity to burglary, one count of complicity to theft of a controlled substance, one count of complicity to impersonating a peace officer, one count of complicity to theft of property valued at less than $300.

Herald, 34, of 3221 Burgees Creek Road, Mallie, is charged with entering the residence of Oscar Craft on Sept. 12, 2007 with Verbon Todd Griffie and/or Brooke Collins with one of the three claiming to be a UNITE officer and taking $180, Lorcet and Xanax while armed with a pistol.

• Donald Allen Maggard, three counts of sexual abuse, one count of rape, one count of intimidating a witness.

Maggard, 52, of 359 Fair View Lane, Neon, is charged with subjecting a 10-year-old female child to sexual contact and sexual intercourse, and threatening to kill the child and/or her family if the child reported his sexual conduct. The grand jury says the actions occurred June 1- June 30 and July 2, 2007.

• Charles “Bud” Perry, four counts of trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), one count of being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Perry, 44, an inmate at Marion Adjustment Center in St. Mary, Ky., sold cocaine to a cooperating witness of the Kentucky State Police four times between January 20 and February 2, 2006.

• Eugene D. Ballou, four counts of wanton endangerment, one count of criminal mischief.

Ballou, no age given, of 988 Billmore Branch, Whitesburg, is charged with pointing and/or firing a pistol on August 25, 2007 into a pickup truck driven by Ronald R. Ballou and occupied by Marsha Ballou, Trevor Ballou, and Alice Ballou. He is also charged with causing damage to the truck in the amount of $1,000 or more.

Letcher County Deputy Mike Rose testified in the case.

• Jessica Lea Stambaugh, one count of rape.

Stambaugh, 24, of 29 Morris Drive, Whitesburg, is charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old male on October 13, 2006.

• Thomas Edward Brock, one count of forgery, one count of possession of a forged instrument, one count of theft by deception.

The grand jury charges that on July 8, 2007, Brock, 45, of 39 Darcas Branch, Whitesburg, signed the name of Elanor Brock to a check in the amount of $100 on her closed account at Whitaker Bank and cashed the check at Mountain Vendors Mall.

• Roger Dale Hall, three counts of trafficking in a controlled substance.

Hall, 48, of Box 1450, Smoot Creek, is charged with selling cocaine to a cooperating witness of the Kentucky State Police on three occasions from January 19 to February 8, 2006.

• Lee Edward Early Jr., one count of complicity to burglary, one count of complicity to theft of a firearm, one count of complicity to theft of property valued at $300 or more.

The grand jury says Early, 36, of 207 Central Street, Cumberland, and/or Phillip White, entered the residence of Otis and Grady Bradley with the intent to commit theft while armed with a pistol and took a Colt 45 caliber pistol, cash, jewelry and other property on June 6, 2007.

• Phillip M. White, one count of complicity to burglary, one count of complicity to theft of a firearm, one count of complicity to theft of property valued at $300 or more.

The grand jury says White, 53 of Cumberland, and/or Lee Edward Early Jr. entered the residence of Otis and Grady Bradley with the intent to commit theft while armed with a pistol and took a Colt 45 caliber pistol, cash, jewelry and other property on June 6, 2007.

• Tabitha Bentley, one possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The grand jury says Bentley, 36, 4253 Hwy. 805, Cromona, possessed one or more long guns, including a 12 gauge shotgun and/or a 30-30 rifle on July 16, 2007 while being a convicted felon.

• Edwin Ray Bentley, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The grand jury says Bentley, 41, 4253 Hwy. 805, Cromona, possessed one or more long guns, including a 12 gauge shotgun and/or a 30-30 rifle on July 16, 2007 while being a convicted felon.

• Michael Wayne Slone, one count of complicity to receive stolen property.

The grand jury says Slone, 31, of 680 Hales Branch, Kite, acting alone or in complicity with Ricky D. Ashley on August 15, 2007 received and/or retained and/or disposed of a guitar and accessories owned by Sarah Hatton which had been stolen from the Camp Branch Pentecostal Church.

• Ricky Dean Ashley, one count of complicity to receive stolen property.

The grand jury says Ashley, 20, of P.O. Box 158, Busy, acting alone or in complicity with Michael Slone on August 15, 2007 received and/or retained and/or disposed of a guitar and accessories owned by Sarah Hatton which had been stolen from the Camp Branch Pentecostal Church.
