Grand jury says ex-boss stole money from Cato’s



The former manager of a Whitesburg clothing store accused of stealing money from her former employer is among 14 persons named in 15 indictments returned by the Letcher County Grand Jury.

Mary Ruth Morris, 40, of 65 Bellaire Dr., Jenkins, is accused of taking $2,560 from Cato’s of Whitesburg. The grand jury says she created and submitted fictitious customer return slips for which she authorized cash refunds from August through December

2010 when she was manager of the store.

Cato District Manager Melody Cooper testified in the case.

Others indicted are:

• Dylan Rose — Complicity to theft, and complicity to third degree burglary.

Rose, 29, of 2000 Hwy. 317, Neon, is accused of stealing a mantrip used to transport coal miners underground and tools with a combined value of $10,000 or more belonging to Hubble Mining #8 on May 1 while alone or with Jody Ray Rose. He is also charged with entering a Hubble Mining #8 building at Franks Creek alone or with Jody Ray Rose with the intent to commit a crime.

Kentucky State Trooper Justin Cornett testified in the case.

• Jody Ray Rose — Complicity to theft, complicity to third degree burglary, and being a persistent felony offender.

• Billy Wayne Spangler — Second degree escape, first degree bail jumping, and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Spangler, 48, of 103 Firefly Road, Whitesburg, failed to report to the Letcher County Jail on Feb. 25 as ordered by the Letcher Circuit Court on Feb. 23.

• Sharlett Denise Spangler — Second degree escape, first degree bail jumping, and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Spangler, 43, of 103 Firefly Road, Whitesburg, failed to report to the Letcher County Jail on Feb. 25 as ordered by the Letcher Circuit Court on Feb. 23.

• Keith Taylor — first degree bail jumping and being a persistent felony offender.

Taylor, 37, of 115 Rollins Cliff Road, Bronston, is accused of failure to appear in Letcher Circuit Court on August 25 in connection with a felony charge.

Letcher Circuit Court Deputy Clerk Sandra Wright testified in the bail jumping cases.

• Michael Joe Amburgey — second degree escape and theft.

The grand jury says Amburgey, 20, of 168 Back Alley Road, Whitesburg, escaped from an electronically monitored home incarceration program on December 9. He is also charged with taking an ankle bracelet owned by East Kentucky Corrections.

Letcher County Deputy Mickey Stines testified in the case.

The grand jury also charged seven people in eight indictments with flagrant non support of their minor children.

• Edward Webb, 31, of 491 Appletree Branch, P.O. Box 77, Deane, is accused of owing $13,111.53 in child support for the period of April 7, 2004 through March 9.

• Richard Profitt, 48, of 1562 Craft’s Colly Road, Ermine, is accused of owing $3,151.20 in child support for the period of October 15, 2007 through March 9.

• Emma Maggard, 51, of 167 Hwy. 3405, P.O. Box 162, Eolia, is charged with owing $6,152.21 in child support for the period of May 1, 1989 through March 9.

• William Johnson, 24, of 1324 South Mayo Trail, Pikeville, is charged with owing $9,624 in child support for the period of May 1, 2008 through March 9.

• Burley Davis, 38, of 109 Hwy. 7 South, Apt. 1, P.O. Box 105, Isom, is accused of owing $3,670.17 in child support for the period of May 15, 2010 through March 9.

• Ernie Burke, 45, of 901 Hwy. 343, Neon, P.O. Box 365, Jenkins, is charged with owing $7,172.19 in child support for the period of October 26, 2005 through March 9.

In a separate indictment, Burke is charged with owing $1,881.92 in child support for the period of October 10, 1998 through March 9.

• Bobby Brown, 34, of 41 Blossom Drive, P.O. Box 2164, Millstone, is charged with owing $8,370 in child support for the period of November 1, 2007 through March 9.
