Group seeking gifts for children of addicts

More than 20 Letcher County residents who are working to beat their addiction to narcotics are also working to make sure some of the county’s less fortunate children will have a merry Christmas.

The 23 men and women who are participating in the Letcher County Drug Court are seeking donations of new and used clothes and toys to give as gifts to children whose parents are in jail because of their drug addictions.

“These are children that one of us or some of us in the group know,” said one drug court participant who is helping organize the toy and clothing drive. “Most likely they have one or both parents in jail and are being raised by their grandparents.”

The participant, who asked not to be identified, said it is important for the community to know the drive doesn’t involve cash donations, and that all donations are to be delivered to drug court supervisors.

“Most people won’t consider giving money to people in drug court, anyway,” the participant said. “And that’s okay. We just want to do something for the community.”

The deadline for donating toys and clothing is November 16. All donations should be delivered April Charles, program supervisor at the drug court office located next to Whitesburg City Hall. The donations will be accepted Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“Our goal is to help the needy and unfortunate children of Letcher County so they can have a merry Christmas,” the participant said. “We need all types of clothing and toys.”
