HANGING A QUILT (SQUARE)

Shane Sexton (left), Jerry Short and Mike Cook (pictured on the ladder) installed a six-foot-by-six-foot barn quilt square on the side of the Hunsaker building in downtown Whitesburg across from the Hoover’s Home Furnishings building on Sept. 13. Burgess Napier is pictured behind the truck. Carolyn Short, Betty Cook and Kathy Napier, wives of the men who mounted the quilt square, painted the bear paw pattern. The women are members of Crafty Cut-ups Extension Homemakers Club. The colorful design is one of the newest of at least 25 large quilt squares which are being painted and displayed on sides of businesses and barns throughout Letcher County by different individuals and organizations.
