HCTC graduation set

Hazard Community & Technical College’s commencement exercises are set for Saturday, May 23, at The Forum in the Hal Rogers Center. The college will hold ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Five hundred sixty seven students are receiving 1,126 credentials this spring. Of that number, 335 are receiving associate in arts, associate in science, or associate in applied science degrees; in addition, 130 diplomas will be awarded, along with 641 certificates.

The student speaker for the morning ceremony will be Vanessa Reynolds, president of the Phi Theta Kappa honorary society based at the Lees College Campus and Peggy Conley, 2009 radiography program graduate, will be the afternoon student speaker.

In honor of three who have passed away in the last year, there will be symbols of remembrance. A rose will be placed in honor of two students and faculty member. Amber NaShea Hall, a nursing student, died April 25. Dustin M. Owens, a radiography student, died Oct. 14, 2008. Both students died following motorcycle accidents. Calvin Gillett, mathematics faculty member, died suddenly Sept. 27, 2008 of complications following surgery.

The City of Hazard will provide free trolley service beginning at 9 a.m. and will run throughout the day. The trolley will allow those who park near the football field to be driven to The Forum entrance.

Following graduation, the Allied Health Division will hold a pinning ceremony at 5 p.m. at The Forum. This ceremony is for all students graduating in the nursing, radiography, and physical therapist assistant programs.

The public is invited to all events.
