L.K.L.P. Head Start has received a grant to expand Early Head Start. The Early Head Start program serves children ages 6 weeks to 3 years.
Early Head Start services are currently provided at three sites. The expansion will take place in Letcher, Knott, Leslie, and Perry counties, adding additional sites and more enrollments. The grant is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
L.K.L.P. Head Start was granted $201,363 for development of the expansion and $644,569 for operating expenses. L.K.L.P. Head Start will be hiring 18 teachers, six teacher assistants, three family services advocates, and 1 health and wellness specialist to provide the infant and toddler services.
Anna Smith, a grandparent who is raising grandchildren who have attended Early Head Start and now Head Start, stated, “Raising my grandchildren has been easier since I enrolled them in Jenkins Early Head Start. I can work knowing that they are in a safe and loving environment. They even have a program to help other grandparents like me.” She was recently chosen to speak on a panel at the Zero to Three Institute, in Washington, D.C.
