Health career camp planned




The University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health (UKCERH), Gear Up Kentucky, and the Southeast KY AHEC will host the 2010 Health Career Summer Enrichment Camp.

The camp, which will be held at the UKCERH in Hazard, will introduce incoming high school freshman and sophomores to a variety of health careers. Students will observe and shadow health professionals, participate in hands-on activi- ties lead by medical students and residents, and tour the Gross Anatomy Lab.

Eighth- and ninth-grade students from Letcher, Perry, Knott, Leslie, Knott, Breathitt, and Harlan County who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and have a 3.0 GPA may apply. Students must complete two application/ recommendation forms, as well as write a onepage essay on why they wish to become a healthcare professional. All materials must be postmarked no later than Jan. 30, 2010.

Students must attend every day and stay for the entire day’s program. Participants who do not will not be eligible to receive the $500 stipend at the end of the camp. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the camp.
