Hearing set for man held in sister’s attack

A preliminary hearing for an 18-year-old Jeremiah man accused of biting off part of his 14-year-old sister’s nose is set for 1 p.m. Thursday in Letcher District Court.

William Dakota Phillips was arrested June 9 and charged with seconddegree assault.

Whitesburg Police Chief Tyrone Fields said the assault was so severe that in addition to the victim having the tip of her nose bitten off, she had a large bite mark on her wrist and bruising and swelling on her neck.

The girl was transferred from the Whitesburg hospital to Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn., where she underwent plastic surgery.

Fields said an altercation between Phillips and his sister occurred about 4:30 a.m. on June 4 near their grandmother’s home in Isom. The girl went to a neighbor’s house and the neighbor called Letcher EMS.

Phillips remains lodged in the Letcher County Jail. Bond is set at $100,000 cash.
