A preliminary hearing for a Whitesburg man charged with drug trafficking is set for 1 p.m. on March 31 in Letcher District Court.
Michael Dee Day, 48, of 3697 Highway 15, was arrested at 12:44 p.m. on March 18 after Lt. Brian Damron of the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department executed a search warrant at Day’s home. According to a police citation written by Damron, police “found several spoons with substances, which were possibly Suboxone or oxycodone” as well as “a small amount of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana”.
The search warrant was issued after a three-week investigation. Damron said the sheriff ’s department had received numerous complaints about an unusual amount of traffic seen in the area.
Day was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (oxycodone), second- degree possession of a controlled substance (Suboxone), drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
Oxycodone is the narcotic contained in painkillers such as Percocet and OxyContin. Suboxone is a drug used to fight cravings in drug addicts. The drug’s manufacturer says it contains a compound which prevents users from abusing it.
Day remains lodged in the Letcher County Jail. His bond is set at $5,000.
