Letcher County Court Clerk Winston Meade recently spoke at a Whitesburg Rotary Club meeting about the Help a Veteran Every Day (H.A.V.E.) program. H.A.V.E. has been adopted by county clerks in eastern Kentucky. Meade and other eastern Kentucky county clerks put together a golf scramble last fall that raised $25,000 for the Veterans Hospital in Hazard. He also has birdhouses, made from recycled Kentucky license plates, available for a $20 donation that benefits veterans’ programs. Because of Meade’s efforts, Letcher County leads the state in raising money for H.A.V.E., and he was named County Clerk of the Year in 2008. On behalf of the Whitesburg Rotary Club, President Barbara Ison presented Meade with a $100 donation for the veterans’ program.
