Hemphill Center going from coal to solar

CNN was in town this past week, on Friday. They came to see about the four solar power projects going on in the county. We got a visit from them on Friday. They are interested in the coal to solar conversion at the four Letcher County facilities and wanted a tour of the Hemphill Center and the Coal Miner’s Monument. We had a long discussion about coal-fired power and solar energy.

The crew from CNN dined and listened to the music of Connections with us after shooting footage around the place. Hopefully you will soon see Letcher County faces on the national news. We are told it may air sometime in July. Be watching.

We did a survey with coal miners before pursuing solar installation. We didn’t want to do anything to offend our own. We were invariably told to proceed as the riders on the Letcher County power bills was and is crippling to the non-profits like Hemphill Community Center as well as residents. The demand rate of $8-plus per kilowatt-hour makes it hard to keep the lights on. Hopefully the solar installation will help us. Construction is to start within two weeks. We are so excited.

A delegation from Black Belt Citizens based in Uniontown, Alabama will visit us this coming weekend. Uniontown has had a problem with polluted water from coal ash that was dumped on the outskirts of their town by TVA, desecration of burial grounds of their ancestors, and all sorts of other issues of injustice. It will be good to see these friends once again and have them finally visit our place.
