Hemphill folks join story circle

Check out our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each event, www.facebook.com/ pages/ Hemphill- Community-Center.

The Senior Fellowship was out in full force last week and had a great time as they always do on Tuesdays. They spend a few moments each Tuesday planning together for the next week’s meal. They plan the menus, cook, serve, and do clean up themselves. They are selfsufficient and fun loving. This is lively happy crew to be a part of if you’ve a mind to join them on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

The Imagining America Institute took place at Appalshop in Whitesburg last weekend. A portion of the group visited us for lunch on Friday. Our new catering company supplied the food. We served grilled chicken sandwiches with all the trimmings along with hearty pasta salad, cornbread salad, melon, and pineapple upside down cupcakes. Our visitors included folks from California, New York, Mississippi, South Carolina, Canada, and other distant places.

Hemphill folks were part of a story circle in which we were asked to share something that has given us hope for the future. The stories from across the country and beyond were much the same as ours here in the coalfields. These folks are thinking about and working toward reinventing a stable economy where they live. We were honored to be a part of their visit to Letcher County. We catered lunch for them on Saturday as well. We are honored also to be a part of the Letcher Culture Hub.

Friday Nite Pickin’ was really good last week with Cross Country Bluegrass supplying us with an entire show of bluegrass music this time. The musicians and dancers did a great job. We celebrated Tom Wright’s birthday with a cake and party foods supplied by his lovely wife, Debbie. It was a really nice evening. You should have joined us.

Schedule of events:

Friday Nite Pickin’ July 22, at 7:30 p.m., William Caudill, Buddy Young, and friends will return for another great evening. Dawson Creek had to cancel so these good friends have stepped up to “take up the slack” for us. We are very grateful for it too.
