Heritage Festival cancelled for first time in 37 years

The Letcher County Mountain Heritage Festival has officially been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic that continues to plague the nation.

The committee in charge of the festival met Tuesday night and made the final decision.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and based on the recommendations of the health department after consultation from Kevin Nichols, as well as discussions with Mayor Craft, we are very sad to say that we have made the decision to cancel this year’s festival,” festival chairwoman Lee Adams said in a written statement.

“This is not a decision that was taken lightly but with everyone’s best interest at heart,” she said. “Our event is a gathering for so many we could not in good conscience put our community at risk by holding the festival.”

The Mountain Heritage Festival has been held in downtown Whitesburg since 1983. This is the first year it has been cancelled.

Adams said the committee hopes to see everyone in September 2021 for the next festival.
