Hogg murder trial still awaiting reset

The Letcher Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office will contact defense attorneys for James R. Huffman IV of Pikeville on or before May 18 to reschedule the murder trial that was postponed last week, under an order from Special Circuit Judge Kent Hendrickson.

Huffman, accused in the New Year’s 2014 murder of Michael Hogg of Kingscreek, was set to go to trial April 17. His trial was continued when a defense witness died in a single-vehicle collision at Payne Gap the prior day.

Hendrickson wrote in his order that when asked, the prosecution could not say it was ready to go to trial because the defense witness shared an adopted child with a prosecution witness and his death “was having a profound psychological effect on her ability to testify.”

Hendrickson continued the trial and ordered Huff- man transported to the Pike County Detention Center, where he will remain until the court orders otherwise.
