House fire kills Redfox couple



A Knott County couple died in a house fire Saturday morning at Redfox.

Gerald Leon ‘ Bi rd’ Thomas, 50, and Martha Eldridge Thomas, 52, were identified as the two who died in the fire.

Kentucky State Police said a wood frame house located at 646 Hales Branch in Redfox was fully involved in fire and two sets of human remains were located inside the home by firefighters.

Police received a call reporting the fire at 7:15 a.m. The Letcher Fire & Rescue,

Carr Creek and Vicco- Sassafras fire departments responded.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by KSP Arson Investigator Joshua D. Bunch and KSP Detective Billy Pollard, but no foul play was suspected.

Funeral services for the couple were held February 28 in Hindman. They were buried in the Thomas family cemetery at Redfox.

Surviving the couple are two daughters, Mary Kathleen Thomas and Levisa Nicole Tuttle, and a grandson, Aeryn Andrew Edwards.

Gerald Thomas is also survived by two brothers, Gary Grayson Thomas and David Thomas, and a sister, Lita Hall. He was a son of the late Canton and Kathleen Finley Thomas, and a brother of the late Estill Canton Thomas.

Surviving Martha Thomas are a brother, Bruce Eldridge, and four sisters, Malinda Jane Back, Sally Hall, Debra Caudill and Etna Caudill. She was a daughter of the late Bruce and Mary Brock Eldridge.
