1. I wrote my first story years ago in The Mountain Eagle after my kids kept asking me to write about my 27 years in the military. My kids knew I’d been to places and did things that few people did. I never wrote a story in my lifetime. I’ve written many reports on the people who worked for me, but writing stories was new to me. I want to thank the good people of The Mountain Eagle for their help all these years with my stories.
2. I want to thank my cousin, Wayne Fleming of Burdine, for getting Cane Branch Road named after me. I was raised on a 100- acre farm at the head of Cane Branch. I have a lot of fond memories of Cane Branch. I’ve never worked so hard as a young kid in my life on that old farm
3. I want to thank the Honorable Jim Ward, Letcher County Judge/Executive, for the kind words he said about me in his Letcher County Fiscal Court proclamation to M/Sgt. Everett B. Vanover on May 21, 2018, “ . . . as a special tribute to him,” he wrote.
3. Last but not least, I want to thank the readers of The Mountain Eagle who wrote or called me to say I’ve written good stories.
