I witnessed the first space shot

The President asked me to train his Air Force One crew at the Noncommissioned Officer Academy, McDill Field, Florida, for five weeks. These men had not marched since basic training many years ago. We won the award for marching in 1965.

A big treat for all of us, along with the instructors, was we were bused to Cape Canaveral for the first space shot for the Air Force. It made headlines everywhere.

Many things I enjoyed during my 30 years in the Air Force, but the space shot and the honor my hometown of Jenkins gave me when it named a bridge for me are the greatest for me. (Thanks, Jenkins.)
