The Imagination Library Program is now registering children in the communities of Cromona 41810, Millstone 41838 and Thornton 41855 in Letcher County. The Imagination Library Program is an early childhood literacy program started by country music singer Dolly Parton that provides an age appropriate book each month to children from birth until they reach their fifth birthday. Books are mailed directly to the home at no cost to the children’s family regardless of household income.
The program is also operating in the communities of Premium, Isom, Blackey, Jeremiah, Letcher, Jenkins, Burdine, Jackhorn, Neon, McRoberts, Hallie, Eolia, Partridge, Gordon, Linefork, Roxana, Deane, Seco and Whitesburg.
Having books in the home encourages parents to read to their children and encourages children to participate actively in story time, respond with enjoyment and interest, tell and retell stories, demonstrate knowledge of the alphabet and recognize words. Children who can identify objects, initiate communication, ask questions, and use words to express feels and thoughts are better prepared academically and socially to attend school as a result of having books in the home. There are currently 454 children registered and receiving books.
