The Imagination Library Program was represented at the Whitesburg Elementary Literacy Night held on March 9. Rotarians Margaret Hammonds, Evelyn Hensley and Barbara Ison represented the Whitesburg Rotary Club at the event, shared information on the program and registered eligible children.
The Imagination Library is an early childhood literacy program started in 1996 by country music singer Dolly Parton. Children from birth until they reach their fifth birthday are eligible to participate. Eligibility means each child registered will receive a free book each month mailed directly to the home at no cost to the family, regardless of family income. The books are age appropriate and introduce the skills children need to be familiar with before entering kindergarten. Children registered at birth can have a library of 58 books in the home they can enjoy over and over again.
The program is currently available in 22 of the 24 zip code areas in Letcher County. The remaining two zip codes, Ermine (41815) and Mayking (41837), are expected to be included later in the year. For more information on how to register a child for the Imagination Library or make a fi- nancial contribution to this program, contact Margaret Hammonds at 633-8200 or Barbara Ison at 634-2106.
