Indictments charge seven




Seven people are named in nine indictments returned recently by the Letcher Grand Jury, including a man charged with injuring four people while driving under the influence.

Shawn Douglas Combs, also known as Shane Douglas Combs, 33, of 8000 Hwy. 160, Whitesburg, is charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants on December 6 and with hitting two cars head on after crossing the centerline. The grand jury says he injured drivers Kelly Neace and Sidney Fields and passengers Kennedi Amburgey and Candies Bates, and damaged Neace’s car. He is also charged with being a persistent felony offender.

Kentucky State Trooper Michael Burton testified in the case.

Others indicted are:

• Bobby Briggs — trafficking in a controlled substance (first degree, opiates), tampering with evidence, assault of a police officer, trafficking in a controlled substance (second degree, Schedule III drug), trafficking in a controlled substance (third degree, drug unspecified), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Briggs, 37, of Box 105, Jenkins, and 166 Bill Lewis Hollow, Jenkins, is accused of trafficking in 10 or more dosages of a narcotic drug, 20 or more dosages of a Schedule III drug, and 20 or more dosages of a Schedule IV or V drug on Jan. 18. He is also charged with destroying a controlled substance during the execution of a search warrant of his residence by the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department and with assaulting Lt. Brian Damron of the Sheriff ’s Department.

• Bradley Allen Johnson — theft and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Johnson, 27, of 648 Yonts Fork, Jackhorn, took jewelry, hand tools, and other items belong to Jessica Johnson and members of her household in June and July. He is also charged with being a persistent felony offender.

• Jimmy Wayne Cook II — receiving stolen property.

Cook, also known as Scrappy, 32, of 172 Ragweed Road, Whitesburg, is accused of possessing copper telecommunication lines valued at more than $500 and stolen from AT&T.

• Scott Emry Kiser — bail jumping.

The grand jury says Kiser, 31, of 162 Pistol City, Whitesburg, failed to appear at Letcher Circuit Court on Sept. 27 in connection with a felony charge.

In a separate indictment, Kiser is charged with failure to appear at a hearing in Letcher Circuit Court on Sept. 27 in connection with a felony charge.

Deputy Letcher Circuit Court Clerk Sandra Wright testified in the cases.

• Stevie Shepherd — flagrant non support.

Shepherd, 49, of 400 Amburgey Branch, Hindman, is charged with failing to provide $12,740.54 in support for his minor child from Sept. 2, 1966 to Jan. 10, 2013.

In a second indictment, the grand jury says he failed to provide $7,630.38 in support for his minor child from Dec. 1, 1999 to Jan. 10, 2013.

• Michael Paul Barker — flagrant nonsupport.

The grand jury says Barker, 38, of 1163 Hwy. 3408, Blackey, failed to provide $11,492.57 in support for his three minor children from April 29, 2003 to Jan. 10, 2013.
