Police are still trying to determine what happened leading up to a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred this morning near or at the scene of an earlier fatal car crash.
Kentucky State Police in Pikeville said a two-vehicle collision occurred about 4 a.m. on KY 805 in Pike County, just across the county line from Letcher County. While that accident was still under investigation, Elkhorn City Police became involved in a high-speed pursuit, and chased the car into the area of the car crash.
That’s when police say the driver attempted to run over officers standing in the roadway, and at least one officer fired on the car.
The shots struck and killed the driver of the vehicle, Tpr. William Petry said.
Petry said exactly what happened still isn’t clear. Troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers were both at the scene, and it wasn’t yet clear who fired the fatal shots. He said it also was not clear whether the officers involved were at the scene due to the earlier fatal crash, or because of the pursuit headed their way.
The state police Critical Incident is investigating and attempting to piece the information together.
