James Reed Dixon, 63, died September 15 at his home in Wise, Va.
Born in Marlowe, he was a son of the late Elijah and Lettie Dixon, and the stepfather of the late Jason Wright.
He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as a sergeant during the Vietnam Conflict. He was also a police officer with the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department and the Whitesburg Police Department.
He was graduated from the Kentucky State Police Academy, and then worked for 17 years in the coalmines as a repairman for Bethlehem Steel.
He had later worked as a corrections officer with the Virginia State Department of Corrections.
Surviving are his wife, Pam Dixon; two daughters, Lettie Dixon of Concord, N.C., and Marsha Cannon and husband Will of Richmond; a grandson, Elijah Cannon; four brothers, Donald Dixon and wife Susan of Moorestown, Tenn., Robert Dixon and wife Shirley of Castlewood, Va., Aubrey Dixon and wife Debbie of Stafford, Va., and Douglas Dixon and wife Martha of Letcher; two sisters, Effie Hatton and husband Charles of Letcher, and Rosemary Foulks of White Plains, N.Y.; a stepson, Gary Wright of North Lake Tahoe, Nev., and an adopted son, Joe Godsey of Jenkins.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Sept. 18, at the Blackey Missionary Baptist Church at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at the Dixon family cemetery at Windy Ridge.
