James Whitaker succumbs at 96



James Hobart “ Jack” Whitaker, 96, of Payne Gap, died November 21 at Pikeville Medical Center.

Born in Payne Gap to the late John C. and Vina Elizabeth Rose Whitaker, he was the widower of Nona Johnson Whitaker.

He was the father of the late Elbert Ray Whitaker and Jeffrey Whitaker, and a brother of the late Estes Whitaker, Bill Whitaker, Pat Whitaker, Marcus Whitaker, Mae Reed and Valma Johnson.

Mr. Whitaker was a member of the Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, James Alvin Whitaker and wife Shelia of Rising Sun, Md.; three daughters, Sue Dragan, and Judy Clemons and husband Danny, all of Elkton, Md., and Brenda Lou Johnson and husband Robert of Payne Gap; two sisters, Caroline Mullins of Shelbyville, and Wanda Wright and husband Andrew of Melvindale, Mich.; four brothers, Russell Whitaker, and Arcie Whitaker and wife Ola Mae, all of Payne Gap, Chris Whitaker of Glen Burnie, Md., and Clarence Whitaker of Bardstown, Oh.; fourteen grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Whitaker were held November 26 at Polly & Craft Funeral Home of Jenkins, of Carty Funeral Homes. Burial was in the Whitaker Cemetery at Payne Gap.
