Jenkins board clarifies policy on tardy students

The Jenkins Independent Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a clarification of language in the Jenkins Middle School handbook concerning the number of times a student can be tardy.

JMS Principal David Lee told the board during a special meeting last week he had found language concerning tardiness that was not clear. Lee said the existing language made it seem permissible for a student to be late a larger number of times than the school intended and did not clean the slate at the end of each six-week grading period.

Under the new guidelines, each student will be allowed to be late no more than three times per sixweek period. At the end of the six weeks, the student starts over with a clean sheet. Lee said after the board conducts the second reading and the policy is approved, it will be put on the school website, placed in the student handbook, and parents will be notified by a handout that will be given to each student.

In other business at the Dec. 22 meeting, the board voted to authorize an overnight trip for students Erika Wright and Allison Goodson, who will represent the Jenkins High band in the All State Band at Paintsville on January 10.
