Jenkins girl honored as young poet

CASSY WILLIAMS

CASSY WILLIAMS

Cassy Williams, a freshman at Jenkins High School, recently was honored as a young poet. “Telephone Time!”, poem she wrote, is included in an anthology of young Appalachian poets. The poem was submitted to the publisher by Sondra Johnson, language arts teacher at JHS.
Telephone Time!
For my free time I talk on the
phone.
It’s the first thing I do when I
get home.
House phone is good, but cell
phone is better
because when I talk on it, I can
talk to whoever.
I talk all day, and I talk all
night.
Because of this, my mom and
I fight.
By the end of the month, she
gets the bill.
The way she yells, gives me
chills.
So my favorite pastime got
me grounded.
And she has hid my phone,
and I haven’t yet found it.
Bored in my room, a plan in
my head.
I can’t wait until my mom
goes to bed.
At last, I see her turn off the
kitchen light.
Then she’s headed upstairs,
she’s in for the night.
I slowly pick up the phone,
and dial by boyfriend.
It seems as if everything in my
house is silent and dead.
I talk to him, and minutes turn
to hours.
Then all of a sudden, I hear
my mom getting up for her
shower.
I quickly hang up, and pretend
to be asleep.
Trust me, this is a secret I will
easily keep.
