The Jenkins Independent Schools Board of Education honored two groups of students who have represented the school system well and brought home honors at their April meeting. Coach April Charles introduced the 14th Region All A champion Lady Cav softball team, who were narrowly shut out of an opportunity to play for a state championship in Somerset this past weekend because of bad weather. Charles told the board that the Cavs had a one-andone record going into the championship rounds, but threatening weather caused the cancellation of the consolation round. If the Lady Cavaliers had emerged from the consolation round, they could have found themselves playing for a state championship.
Charles also said the Cavs are still in the district race and will play on Tuesday at Letcher County Central High School. She added that there are only 13 girls on the team and nine of them played backto back games at the state championships.
Jenkins Elementary Principal Stacy Collier also introduced the Elementary STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) Team, which recently made final 15 at the state STLP competition held at Rupp Arena. Collier told the board that this is the first time the team has made it this far and added that its project won “Best in Show.” The team consists of Mackenzie Elswick, Kenna Anderson, Lynsey Anderson, Jacob Kelly, Jaylee Collier, Landon Moore, Delaney Johnson, and Austin Johnson.
