Jenkins is win away from play-offs

The Jenkins Cavaliers defeated the Phelps Hornets last week, 43-0, and will assure themselves of playing in the post-season if they can beat the Evarts Wildcats later this week.

The Cavaliers were led to the district win at Phelps by Matt Johnson and Chris Puckett, who scored three touchdowns apiece. Phelps played most of the game without its team leader, star run- ning back Patrick Dotson, who was forced to leave the game early after suffering a dislocated elbow.

Johnson scored the game’s opening touchdown on an 18- yard pass from starting quarterback Puckett, who also kicked the extra-point kick.

The Cavs quickly expanded the lead to 14-0 after Johnson, at quarterback this time, connected on a TD pass of 14 yards touchdown to Puckett, who again made the extra point.

Sparked by the return to the starting lineup of Stephen Stevens, who had been absent for five weeks because of an injured knee, the Cavaliers seemed to score at will for the rest of the game.

The Jenkins defense, led by 11 tackles from Nick Fleming, also got in on the scoring when Justin Hunsaker recovered a fumble and found the end zone from 20 yards out.

A 20-yard touchdown run by Johnson was made possible after senior Brody Dixon returned a punt more than 50 yards. Cory Maggard then scored on a two-point conversion for the Cavs.

Senior Jonathan Taylor also played well for the Cavaliers despite being hampered by two injuries.
